X / Y Capacitors
X / Y capacitors are used for interference suppression on power supply inputs. The inputs may be subjected to impulse generated by lightning strikes on outside lines or switching in equipment. A 1.2/50us impulse is used for capacitor tests with and without AC power applied. In addition to the impulse insulation tests, active flammability tests are conducted to ensure the safety of equipment in event of a capacitor failing. The principle test requirements are defined in the standard IEC 61384-14. Edition 4 of the standard extends the scope for capacitors up to 50 µF.

Active flammability test on X and Y capacitors
CAP-0804 is used to test the active flammability properties of both X and Y capacitor types up 1 uF. Extended with the EXT-CAP0804, capacitors up to 50 µF can be tested. An integrated supply is used to power the test capacitors with up to 800 Vac.
6 kV insulation tester for X capacitors
MIG0603CAP is a 6 kV compact impulse generator with high voltage terminals on top. It generates a 1.2/50µs voltage impulse capable of testing X1 and X2 type capacitors.
12 kV insulation tester for X & Y capacitors
MIG1212CAP is a 12 kV compact impulse generator with high voltage terminals on top. It generates a 1.2/50µs voltage impulse capable of testing X1, X2, Y2 and Y4 type capacitors.

24 X / Y capacitor samples must be tested. This process can be automated by adding multiplexers to the generator high voltage outputs. Eight capacitor samples are fitted and tested sequentially under full control from the generator front panel. Combined with the TC-ST or TC-ST-F test cabi-nets, personnel safety is ensured.
